Volunteers Needed to Plan Safety Fair

We are seeking volunteers who are interested in assisting with our upcoming Safety Fun Fair in October!  We are wanting to make this an interactive fair with booths to visit while learning about different safety measures from fire to toy safety to animal safety.  We are also wanting to have some prizes to give away.  We have already started some planning BUT we need your help and your ideas!

Please contact Charlotte Vanderbilt at macky52@msn.com or 801-671-2731 if you are interested in helping out at any level.  We are planning a brief meeting on Thursday, September 2nd at 6:00pm at the Beans and Brews located on the corner of 5600 W and 3100 S (west side of the street.) At this time we will throw out ideas and thoughts and assign tasks.  This event will mainly require us to make phone calls.

Tardy and Absence Procedure

Welcome back! We are excited to work with you and your students this year.

I need to take a moment to clarify our tardy and attendance procedure, because we are having too many students showing up late.  Students will be marked tardy up to 10 minutes late (after the 8:00 a.m. bell rings).  Students who reach 3 tardies in a term will be given a natural consequence to attend After School detention.  Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late will be marked absent and will need a parent note get into class.

Please make it a priority to get your students to school on time. Every student who walks into class late disrupts the educational flow of the class, both for the students and the teacher.

I realize that it's a difficult transition time and that many/most of the students may still be on their summer wake up schedule. Nevertheless, we really need your help getting the students here on time every morning so classes can start without disruption at 8:00 a.m.

It's going to be a great school year. Thank you so much for your support.

Michael Westover
CEO/Director.

Welcome Back

Welcome back! It's amazing how fast time flies when we're having fun. I'm confident that it's going to be a great school year. Everything is in place, and we are more prepared than ever before.
I have good news to report... Monticello Academy made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) under NCLB (No Child Left Behind) for the 4th straight year in a row. This is quite the accomplishment, because there are literally 30 ways to fail AYP/NCLB. We continue to shine academically because of your commitment to Monticello Academy's core academic and character values. I hope you realize that we are as committed as ever to help each of our students succeed. Our teachers receive extensive staff development in Core Knowledge, Singapore Math, and Spalding English, and they plan and work as teams on a weekly basis. They are truly excited to teach and work with your students. Monticello Academy is an excellent school, and it is only going to get better.
I would also like to take a moment to introduce each of our new teachers:

  • Lindsay Neidrich - Kindergarten
  • Rachel Yeager - Kindergarten
  • Katie Madsen - 1st grade
  • Cindy Petersen - 3rd grade
  • Nick Lennox - 4th and 5th grade
  • Christine Pimlott - 4th and 5th grade
  • Stephanie Simmons - 6th and 7th grade Science
  • Katherine Krein - 8th and 9th grade Language Arts
  • Brandt Shaw - 8th and 9th grade History/CTE
  • Amy Ollerton - Art
  • Wei Chi Shiung - Chinese teacher

As you know, we have a number of successful leadership programs already running at Monticello Academy. Our Student Council, Tri-M Music Leadership program, National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) program, and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) program all provide opportunities for students to promote the mission of Monticello Academy while improving and growing personally.
In addition to these wonderful leadership programs, we implemented a school-wide Character Education program during the 2nd semester of last year. This program is overseen by our school Counselor who was hired mid-year. We also piloted additional "programs" in the final (4th term) last year that were a big success. We will continue these programs and more fully implement them this year:

  • Student Leadership meetings - Once/month, the Student Council will conduct a meeting with the teacher-selected Character Education students for that month, as well as with the NEHS and the NJHS students, and our Safety Patrol students all combine to discuss critical issues in the school and ways to improve the school's programs and culture.
  • Student Safety Patrol - Students are recruited to help us monitor traffic, halls, lunches, and recesses.
  • Honor Roll, Collegiate Club, and Presidents Club - In addition to a quarterly Honor Roll, students are recognized quarterly with fun rewards for academic AND citizenship achievement AND improvement. The "Collegiate Club" is made up of students earning an average of a 3.5 to 3.79 GPA AND CPA (Citizenship Point Average) and/or a .5 point improvement from the previous quarter. The "Presidents Club" is made up of students earning an average of a 3.8+ GPA AND CPA and/or an improvement of 1 point. Please see the attached list of students who were Collegiate and Presidents Club members from 4th quarter of the 2009-2010 school year. These were our best and brightest students last year.

Some of you may be interested to know that we are moving our 4th and 5th grade classes to more of a self-contained model this year. However, we still have specialist teachers in Math and each of the "specials" (art, foreign language, and music).

Further, we have added some new classes in our middle school this year:

  • Investigative Science class in grades 8 and 9 (taught by Stephanie Simmons)
  • Gifted and Talented class in grades 8 and 9 (taught by Jenni Kelland)
  • Additional elective classes in grades 8 and 9 (i.e., various Art and Music classes taught by our specials teachers)

We are also excited to start some clubs. We will be forming secondary clubs in the month of September, such as a dance/cheer club.

As a point of interest, the Board of Directors has approved construction on a new Special Education classroom and pull-out rooms to be built in the open space upstairs. Please be patient during construction.

I hope you know that we are all truly excited for the new school year. We hope you and your students are, as well.

Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We sincerely hope that you will make time to volunteer at Monticello Academy in one or multiple capacities. Traffic (morning or afternoon) is one way to contribute. Joining the Parent Council is another way to make a difference (contact me immediately if you are interested in joining the Parent Council). Volunteering in your child(ren)'s classroom is another great way to volunteer. Whatever you decide to do, the most important thing is that you are involved.

While we're on the topic of traffic, PLEASE carefully read the "Traffic Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures" memo that was passed out at registration and posted on the school's website. We really need to do everything we can to ensure the safety of our students.

Monticello Academy is already an excellent school, and it is only getting better. It is going to be a great school year.

Sincerely,
Michael Westover
Director
